Sofa pillows are available in an array of colors and design styles that can greatly enhance any living room decor. Sofa pillows provide complementary color to bring out the details of a favorite vase or piece of artwork in the room. The pillows are affordable and easy to use, but because of their frequent functional purpose, they can become dirty rather quickly. Fortunately, cleaning sofa pillows is a very simple process which does not require any special skills.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pillowcase for each sofa pillow
  • Mild laundry detergent (such as Dreft)
  • Washing machine and dryer
  • Dryel kit (for use only on certain pillow materials)
  1. Step 1

Determine whether your pillows have covers which can be removed by unzipping.

  2. Step 2

Remove the sofa pillows individually from your sofa.

  3. Step 3

Gently wipe down each sofa pillow with a dry towel or cloth. Ensure that each sofa pillow is free of debris or food particles.

  4. Step 4

Determine the material of your sofa pillows. Most sofa pillows are machine washable. Some (such as silk or linen pillows) are not.

  5. Step 5

Set aside any pillows which are made of non-washable materials like silk or linen.

  6. Step 6

Remove the pillow cover if your pillows have a zippered cover.

  7. Step 7

Place your sofa pillows into a pillowcase. The pillowcase will serve as a protector from washing machine damage.

  8. Step 8

Turn your zippered pillow covers inside out, so that the interior is on the exterior. This will protect the cover in the washing machine.

  9. Step 9

Run the sofa pillows through a cycle in your washing machine. Set your washing machine for gentle cycle in cold water.

  10. Step 10

Remove the sofa pillows from the pillowcase protector, and leave them on a blanket outdoors in the sunlight for several hours to dry.

  11. Step 11

Place the sofa pillows in your dryer for appromately half an hour on the lowest setting possible. Most dryers have tumble, press or fluff as a low-drying option.

  12. Step 12

Check to see if your sofa pillows are dry and have been properly fluffed. Continue drying on low until they have reached the consistency you require.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is important that you do not get silk or linen pillows wet. For cleaning silk or linen pillows, use a home dry cleaning kit such as Dryel. To use Dryel simply place your pillows into the zippered compartment bag with a dry cleaning sheet (contained in the bag). Place the bag in your dryer on a low setting, such as tumble, and dry for 20 minutes. When the drying cycle is complete, remove the sofa pillows from the dry cleaning bag. Pillows will smell fresh and be ready to use.
