- Stapler or tacks
- Gesso

- Stencils

- Box cutter
- Rubber cement
-
Step 1
Cut out a piece of canvas about 6 inches larger than your finished cloth in either direction. Wash the canvas to remove any sizing. Use a stapler or tacks to stretch the canvas over the wooden frame.
-
Step 2
Paint the front surface of the canvas with artist's gesso, then paint the back the same way. This will give your floor cloth a white base on which to paint your design. When the gesso is completely dry, paint the front surface with a second coat to help with preventing wear. Allow to dry thoroughly.
-
Step 3
Paint your design on the front of the canvas, using stencils and brushes. Pounce the paint into the stencil opening by gently tapping the brush tip onto the surface, rather than stroking the brush across the fabric. Begin in the center of the cloth and work your way towards the outside edge. Allow the paint to dry completely.
-
Step 4
Cover the entire surface of the cloth with two coats of Minwax Polycrylic, allowing the first coat to dry before applying the second. This will protect the paint and help prevent it from being worn by daily foot traffic. When both coats are dry, use the box cutter to cut the cloth from the frame.
-
Step 5
Fold under the leading 1/2 inch of each edge as a hem, and secure it with rubber cement. When the rubber cement is dry, your floor cloth is complete.
