How to Remove AC Compressor from a 94 Camaro V6

The 1994 Chevrolet Camaro with the 3800 series V-6 motor was manufactured with an air conditioner as optional equipment. This system uses a compressor to move freon through a condenser and evaporator, cooling the interior. The compressor can wear out and fail, requiring removal. The average backyard mechanic can remove this compressor in about an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Screwdrivers
  • Line wrench or open-ended wrench

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the battery by turning the positive terminal bolt counterclockwise until it is free. Set the terminal aside, away from any metal.

    • 2

Evacuate the freon from the air conditioning system by taking the Camaro to a garage or authorized freon collection facility. It is illegal to vent the system into the atmosphere, even with the newer 143-a coolant that is in the Camaro's 3800 engine.

    • 3

Uncouple the freon lines by turning the line bolts in a counterclockwise direction with a line wrench. An open-ended wrench will also suffice, but it may be difficult to maneuver. Set the lines aside, away from the work area; the lines do not need to be disconnected from the other A/C components.

    • 4

Press firmly on the belt tension pulley until the main drive belt has enough slack to slide out from underneath the idle pulley. This will give enough slack to disengage the belt from the A/C compressor pulley.

    • 5

Remove the compressor mount bolts by turning them in a counterclockwise direction. The adjustment bolt will relieve tension on the other mount bolts and allow them to come out smoothly. Turn the bottom mount nut counterclockwise until it is free.

    • 6

Disconnect the wiring harness from the compressor at the adapter plug by pulling the plug from the contacts on the compressor.

    • 7

Slide the compressor from the bottom mount and off the car.

Tips & Warnings

  • A/C compressors are a shared GM model, and what works for other 3800 V-6 GM cars could also work for the Camaro.

  • Use caution when working on the A/C system of a vehicle; even if evacuated there may still be a small amount of pressure in the system.
