How to Train a Min Pin Puppy

Minature Pinschers, or "Min Pins," are one of the most popular dog breeds. Often referred to as the "Kings of the Toy Breeds," these intelligent cuties can be difficult and stubborn. But with proper training, you can teach your Min Pin to be well-behaved and respectful.

How to Train a Min Pin Puppy

1. Train your min pin starting the very first day you have her. Whether you are potty or obedience training, this step is essential.

2. Show your Min Pin that you are in command. Min Pins can be stubborn and can try to control their owners. The only way your puppy will respect you and do what you want of him is by showing him that you are in charge. This can be achieved by placing your puppy on his back while you hold him, in the same manner as one would cradle a baby. Lying with his belly up and exposed puts your puppy in a submissive position. He will learn that you are dominant over him if you practice this technique.

   In addition, take him for leashed walks during the day and be sure to walk side-by-side. If he walks in front of you, he will feel like he is leading you. Walking together and controlling him on the leash should show him that you are in fact the leader.

3. Be consistent in your training methods. Not doing so can make training harder and take longer to do. For example, when teaching your puppy commands, make sure you use the same words each time. If you choose to use the word "sit" when teaching her this trick, say that word every time -- mixing it up by using another word such as "down" will only confuse her and it will take her longer to master this command. Furthermore, it is helpful to say her name before giving the command. If you choose to do this, make sure you do it every time.

   When potty training your Min Pin, use the same routine each time you take her outside. Futhermore, it will also be beneficial to take her outside at the same times each day, such as when you wake up, after she eats, before and after work and before you go to bed. Although you may have to take her out more than just these times, as most Min Pin puppies need to relieve themselves every few hours. Take her to the same spot outside through the same door each time. This will make her familiar with the routine and she'll start to learn what she is expected to do. Again, if you decide to use a word to assist in her going to the bathroom, such as "potty" or "empty," be sure to use the same one each time. After she successfully goes, you can reward her with a treat.

4. Be patient when training your Min Pin puppy. Every dog is different and learns in his own time and way. Your puppy will have accidents and won't do things perfectly the first time you show him. It is important to be encouraging and reassuring during the training process. Doing so will create a happier, trusting pet.

Tips & Warnings

• Reward your pet after she properly obeys a command. She will associate a treat with displaying the correct behavior and will be encouraged to do so more often.

• Don't hit or hurt your pet if he disobeys. Say "no" and hold him in your arms like a baby with his belly up. This will show him that you are dominant over him and will encourage him to do as you say. Hitting your pet can cause him to be fearful and aggressive.
