The IP address is responsible for location addressing and host identification. It's beneficial to know how to obtain someone's IP address when chatting on the Internet. If someone you do not know decides to chat with you, for safety you can look up their IP address and see where they are chatting from.

How to Find Someone's IP Address by AIM Chat

  • Send an instant message to the user whose IP address you want to discover.

  • Build a connection with the user by creating a direct connection. To create a direct connection, click on "Connect to Send IM Image." Your buddy will then have to accept the connection.

  • Open the command prompt in Windows. To open the command prompt, click "Start" then "Run." Once the command prompt is open, type "cmd" and hit "Enter." This will bring up a MSDOS type of window with more command prompts.

  • Type "netstat-an" in the command prompt window and hit "enter." This will bring up all of your current connections. The AIM user port is 4443.

  • Look for port 4443 and you will see the IP of the user you are connected with.
