Things You'll Need:
- Moisturizing shampoo
- Moisturizing conditioner
- Boar bristle brush
-
Step 1
Incorporate a moisture rich shampoo and conditioner into your hair care routine. Keeping your hair and scalp as healthy and moisturized as possible will make the transition from black hair to gray hair easier by smoothing the hair cuticle so all the hair strands blend in together nicely.
-
Step 2
Cut your hair as short as is flattering to your face shape. This way, the new gray strands don't take quite as long to reach the same length as the black hair strands.
-
Step 3
Ask a stylist to highlight your hair, or do it yourself at home with a home hair coloring kit. This is optional, but if you add a few dark brown highlights to your black hair, the new gray hairs will blend in a little better. You could also highlight gray into your hair which essentially speeds up the transition.
-
Step 4
Style your hair gently to avoid breakage. Gray hairs are physically different than your black hairs because they are more coarse and more prone to breakage. By minimizing harsh styling with curling irons and hot hairdryers, you'll minimize your risk of having awkward, broken-off gray strands.
-
Step 5
Brush your hair with a boar bristle brush rather than one with plastic bristles. Boar bristle brushes more evenly distribute the natural oils of your scalp throughout your hair. Gray hairs are especially susceptible to dryness and breakage, and there's no better moisturizers than your scalp's own natural oils.
