How to Become a Petite Model

In the not-too-distant past, it seemed as if the world of modeling was only open to taller women, since agencies looked for girls 5 feet 8 inches or taller. Then Josie Maran became a well-known model at 5 feet 6 inches and Tyra Banks broadcast a season of America's Next Top Model that featured petite girls.

If you want to become a petite model, then you'll need to put in more work than the taller girls.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn how to work your body properly. As a petite model you're at a disadvantage because when you compete against taller girls, they have a tendency to push you out of the way and take over the picture. Try practicing in front of a mirror and working on poses that make you look longer and leaner.

    • 2

Give yourself an honest once-over and check out your facial structure and body. Petite models often work in fields that focus on one specific body part, rather than the whole body. If you have a great feature such as eyes, lips or hands, then you have a better shot at working as a model.

    • 3

Create a portfolio of top-quality pictures, either taken by a professional photographer or by a close friend skilled in photography. As a petite girl, you should showcase your best features, but also take candid pictures. Focus on pictures that show you active in the outdoors and posed inside.

    • 4

Send your portfolio to local talent agencies and modeling agencies. You're far more likely to become successful as a petite model if you're willing to start out in your local community. This lets you do projects and shows in your immediate area and helps you build up your portfolio and resume.

    • 5

Attend "go-sees" arranged by your agent. A go-see is where you go to an agency, designer or store and let the company's hiring agent look you over to determine if she wants to use you in a show or project. Once you have more jobs under your belt and more success in the field, it will be easier to book projects.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't be afraid to get a second opinion about your facial structure and body. If you think you're biased, then call and arrange a visit with a local modeling agency and ask for the opinion of those on staff. You never know when you might book a show or find an agent by making an appointment.

  • Do your research before signing on with an agency or talent scout to make sure the company is legitimate.
