How to Scuff Paint Your Own Car

If you have ever been in a slight fender bender or come back to the parking lot to see a dent in one of your car doors, you've probably noticed that there is some paint scratched into your car from the offending vehicle. Although washing your car may remove some of the paint, it does not remove all of it. To do this you need to scuff the unwanted paint out in order to bring the original color of your car back to life.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Sand off the unwanted paint with sandpaper. A sanding wheel can speed up the process if you have one. Don't worry if you remove some of your car's original paint in the process.

    • 2

Wash off the area with a rag and water. You need to make sure all of the flakes from the sanding are removed.

    • 3

Dip a rag into auto paint primer and cover up the area you sanded. This will help hold down the paint job and keep the car from rusting.

    • 4

Spray auto detailing paint onto the sanded area once the primer dries. A small can of the paint should suffice since this type of scuff does not cover a large area. Hold the can about 8-10 inches away from the car when you apply the paint.

Add additional coats to the area until you have a full, rich color and it matches the rest of the exterior paint.
