How to Know the Symptoms of Aspartame Poisoning

Aspartame, an artificial sweetener widely used in packaged and processed foods, is promoted as an alternative to table sugar for diabetics. However, some experts, such as the Ramazzini Foundation, suggest that aspartame may be a serious health hazard, with side effects that can mimic other health conditions. If you regularly consume products with aspartame, and are experiencing symptoms similar to asthma or epilepsy, talk to your doctor about the possibility of aspartame poisoning.

According to Vanderbilt University, some people who regularly consume soft drinks containing aspartame have reported chronic headaches. In a study monitored by Duke University Medical Center, 40 people consumed foods or beverages containing aspartame, and were observed for any changes. The subjects varied in age, gender and lifestyle. Headaches followed, and tended to be moderate to severe. The headaches started within 24 hours of consuming the food or beverage containing aspartame.

The National Soft Drink Association connected aspartame-induced headaches with higher levels of formaldehyde in the body. Because headaches are a common ailment, it can be difficult to determine if they are connected to aspartame. Aspartame-induced headaches tend to be long lasting and do not respond well to pain-relieving medications.

Seizures are a more severe reaction that has been connected to aspartame consumption, as suggested by the University of Maryland Medical Center. Seizures cause the body to experience mild to severe muscular spasms. These spasms appear in a variety of ways, from mild muscle twitching in the hands and arms to a grand mal seizure, which produces violent, whole-body jerking.

These seizures resemble the seizures typical of a person suffering from epilepsy. Seek medical attention right away if you experience seizures and do not have epilepsy.

Breathing problems were also seen in the results from the Duke University Medical Center study. Subjects reported shortness of breath and asthma-like symptoms. The greater the consumption of foods or drinks containing aspartame, the more likely people were to experience breathing troubles.

Shortness of breath that is severe enough can lead to lightheadedness and dizziness. If shortness of breath is experienced, and there is no history of asthma, seek medical treatment. Doctors can run tests to determine whether an underlying condition is causing your shortness of breath, or if it could have been caused by aspartame poisoning.
