Prevent Weight Gain During the Holidays
Prevent Weight Gain During the Holidays

Let's not kid ourselves. During the holidays, it is hard to prevent weight gain. Planning ahead is the best weapon against the battle of the bulge this holiday season.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Drink lots of water. 8-10 8oz glasses a day will help to prevent weight gain. There is some research showing that people who drink more water tend to eat better during the day as well. Water also helps to flush out toxins which is always a bonus.

  2. Step 2

Eat breakfast. You hear it all the time, but it is crucial to eat a good breakfast. Something with a protein/carb/fiber combination is best. You will be less likely to crave everything that comes your way throughout the day. People who eat a decent breakfast every morning tend to have an easier time preventing weight gain.

  3. Step 3

Plan ahead. If you know you will be attending a party later in the evening, have little snacks frequently throughout the day eating less calories than usual. Then you will have some wiggle room to splurge a little later that night. Make sure to only pick foods that you absolutely love and savor each bite.

  4. Step 4

Exercise. 30 minutes every day is good for maintenance. However, to prevent weight gain, you must increase the intensity and the length of time you exercise when consuming more calories. During the holidays, pick two or three days of the week when you exercise hard for 45 minutes to an hour. This will help offset increased caloric intake.

  5. Step 5

Sleep. The holidays come with its share of stresses which can cause your body to secrete more cortisol and increase the fat storage. Sleeping 7-8 hours a day strengthens both your mind and body to help fend against stress, enjoy the holidays, and prevent weight gain.
