How to Treat Burps. We've all done it, one moment your sitting there enjoying a meal then you burp. You look around and see your mothers hand coming for revenge. So how to stop this and still enjoy your food? Read on.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Acid Tablets
  • Avoidance of certain foods
  • Changing Habits
  1. Step 1

Burping is caused by the accumulation of gas in the stomach. Eventually this results in the gas escaping up through the throat causing the belching noise of a burp. Usually this gas comes from unintentional swallowing or during consumption of food.
The very first step to decreasing your burping problem is to be aware of your habits of swallowing air. Many people do this to alleviate dry mouths or throats, I'm guilty of this, or just to swallow air when they are nervous. Stop this and you will substantially reduce the burps.

  2. Step 2

Next you will want to avoid behaviors during eating that induce burping. This includes eating fast, not chewing your food properly and drinking through straws to name a few. If you see that you are swallowing amounts of air for no reason then stop the activity. By sipping on a glass instead of a straw you get less air than the suction you create on a straw. Eating fast gets the food down but with large amounts of air. Proper chewing and swallowing will help alleviate the gas buildup in your gut. Remember to always chew with your mouth CLOSED!

  3. Step 3

Next you will want to avoid foods that cause the gas to build up. This list includes carbonated beverages, beans of all sorts and light airy foods (think whipped cream). These introduce gas to the gut inadvertently and the non consumption will help too alleviated burping symptoms. Also to be avoided is gum, this introduces gas by chewing it (you inadvertently swallow air).

  4. Step 4

Make sure you do some sort of activity after eating. The physical exertion will allow the gas (burps) to escape slowly instead of building up to a disastrous effect.
Also you swallow air by smoking, if you have to smoke do it when you don't have to eat a heavy meal.

  5. Step 5

If all else fails then you will most likely have to see a doctor. Have them perform tests to see if you stomach is less acidic than what it should be. By not having the proper amount of acid in your stomach this leads to the excessive build up of gas. If this is the case then all you have to do is pop in a couple of acid tablets (sold at most nutritional stores such as GNC) and your good to go.
