In the mid 80s there was a fad for matching your socks to your t-shirt. You could buy matching shirts with socks packed together in some stores. This fad turned into the layered sock fad. For the purpose of these instructions the colors red and white are being used, but you can substitute with your favorites. This was a look favored by teenage girls, and I actually remember one showing off her red and white candy cane outfit that looked just like the one described. The socks tended to have slouchy tops, and thin fitted feet.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • One pair white shoes
  • Two pairs of red socks
  • One pair of white socks
  • One pair of white jeans
  • One red t-shirt
  • One white ear rings, or banana clip.
  1. Step 1

Put on white jeans. This fad was actually at it's height just before acid wash, so plain white jeans will work. For a truly 80s look make sure they have a high 80s waist, and narrow ankles that stop well above the shoes. If your jeans are loose at the cuff, peg them.

  2. Step 2

Put on the red t-shirt. Make sure it's good and baggy. Tight t-shirts were not cool at this time. Also don't go with the off the shoulder flash dance look. That look was from about 5 years earlier.

  3. Step 3

Put on the red socks first.

  4. Step 4

Put on the white socks over the red socks.

  5. Step 5

Put on the red socks. Now arrange the socks so you can see alternating evenly spaced sock tops, one after another.

  6. Step 6

Put on the white shoes. Reebok Classics, or Keds fit with this 80s look the best, but off brand white running shoes are fine.

  7. Step 7

Put on the white ear rings and or banana clip for a final color alteration.
