Homemade french fries are delicious and easy to make right in your own kitchen. All you need is 5-10 minutes to prepare the potatoes used to make homemade french fries and about 20-25 minutes to cook. Make quick and easy homemade french fries with any meat dish and you'll have a super meal in under a half an hour. Then all you'll need to do is add a few dashes of salt to your homemade french fries (dipping sauce optional) and your finished!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A deep fryer
  • Vegetable oil
  • 6-7 white potatoes (for 4 servings)
  • Sharp cutting knife
  • Cutting board
  • Large wooden or regular plate (can use a bowl)
  • Paper towels
  • Salt
  • Ketchup or vinegar for dipping (optional)
  1. Step 1

Wash the potatoes and set aside. Add vegetable oil to the correct line of your deep fryer and turn the fryer on to preheat. Slice the potatoes in medium thick slices to create circles. Cut each potato circle lengthwise to make semi-thick potato sticks. Do this with all 6-7 potatoes and set aside.

  2. Step 2

Check the heat of the vegetable oil in the fryer by lightly flicking a couple drops of water into the fryer. Be very careful, however, as water can splash back up toward you. Most deep fryers come equipped with a light that senses and goes off or on when the fryer is fully heated.

  3. Step 3

When you're sure the deep fryer is fully heated (usually about 8-10 minutes), place a few hand fulls of potato sticks into the fryer basket. Take care not to overfill the basket. Carefully slide the basket down into the heated vegetable oil and cover with the fryer lid.

  4. Step 4

Cook potato sticks for about 20 minutes, checking every 10 minutes and stirring the potatoes around (out of the oil of course). Once your potato french fries are a nice golden brown, remove the basket from the fryer and allow the excess vegetable oil to drip back into the fryer.

  5. Step 5

Sprinkle the golden brown french fries onto a couple of paper towels laid onto a wooden platter or plate. The paper towels will help to soak up the grease from the french fries and make them tastier. Add a few dashes of salt to taste and let the french fries cool for a few minutes.

  6. Step 6

Serve french fries with dipping sauce such as ketchup, vinegar, or ranch dressing (depending on what you prefer) and a meat dish. These french fries go great with meat dinners such as hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, or steak. You can even have them with sandwiches, add them to salads, or eat them alone. Serves 4 people.

Tips & Warnings
  • For a low-fat version of these homemade french fries, swap vegetable oil for extra virgin olive oil and leave out the salt or use sea salt or Mrs. Dash for flavoring.
