Things You'll Need:
- Car with a good battery
- Jumper cables
-
Step 1
Inspect the dead battery. Make sure there are no cracks in the casing. If you see any fluids dripping out, do not attempt to jump start the battery. Batteries contain explosive gases which can be harmful.
-
Step 2
Pull the second car with a good battery up to yours so the batteries are as close together as possible. Leave the car with the charged battery running and open both hoods.
-
Step 3
Using your jumper cables, connect only the positive cable (red cable) to the positive terminal of the dead battery - also marked in red.
-
Step 4
Now connect the next positive cable to the positive terminal on the good battery.
-
Step 5
Connect the negative cable to the negative terminal on the good battery.
-
Step 6
Finally connect the last negative cable to any piece of grounded metal around your battery.
-
Step 7
Start the car with the dead battery. The car should start right up but make sure you leave it running for about 10 minutes to charge the battery. You may remove the jumper cables as soon as the vehicle has started.
