Step 1
The first step is to always keep at least a ¾ full tank of gas in your vehicle. In an emergency you may need to evacuate. If the power is out the service station may not be able to pump gas.
-
Step 2
The second step is to place a clean coat, gloves, and cap in your car. You may not have the time in an emergency to look for these. I always keep my oldest coat (you know the one with holes but is oh so comfortable).
-
Step 3
The third step is to replace your windshield wipers (if they need it). You may need the extra visibility.
-
Step 4
The fourth step is to have your antifreeze replaced or flushed in your car. You don’t need it freezing up on you.
-
Step 5
The fifth step is to put several old blankets in the car. Put them in a garbage bag to keep them clean. Also you can use the garbage bag as a raincoat in a pinch.
-
Step 6
The sixth step is purchase an update to date map of your area and put it in the car. You can look it over when you are not busy. I like to pretend that I have to evacuate from wherever I am stuck in traffic. I can plan several potential routes. This allows you to become familiar with roads that you may not have thought of before.
-
Step 7
The seventh step is to inspect your tires. Check the air pressure and replace any old and worn out tires when you can.
-
Step 8
The eighth step is to place a box in the trunk. Put non-perishable foods in it that won’t be hurt if they are frozen. Raisins, chocolate bars, and other dried fruits are excellent examples.
-
Step 9
The ninth step it to check your flashlight. You may need to put batteries in it before you put it back in the glove compartment.
