Refinish a Chair
Refinish a Chair

There's nothing more rewarding than turning old items into new treasures. Here are some simple steps to help you refinish a chair from drab to fab. Read on.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Find the perfect item. While sometimes the perfect chair to refinish is right in your own home, don't overlook the value of visiting thrift stores and yard sales.

  2. Step 2

Prep. To get ready to refinish a chair, remove the seat from underneath the chair and lightly sand the frame with a low grain sand paper to ensure that the paint adheres to the wood properly.

  3. Step 3

Paint. Using your paint color and finish of choice (satin finish works nicely), put on the first coat of paint and allow to dry completely before applying the second coat. If you prefer a shabby chic finish, lightly sand the edges of the chair frame to reveal the natural wook.

  4. Step 4

Re-cover the seat. Place the chair seat face down on the back side of your fabric, cutting a piece of fabric so that there is a 5-6 inch fabric allowance around the edges of the seat. Fold and staple the fabric to the seat, pulling the fabric taut, until the seat is covered.

  5. Step 5

Add the finishing touches. Re-attach the seat, add a decorative pillow, stand back, and admire your beautiful new chair.
