During a teacher parent conference, ask behavior type questions regarding your son / daughter:
How does my child seem to get along with classmates?
Have you noticed any problems with my child?
Is he / she respectful to you and other students?
Does my child seem to enjoy being in class? -

Teacher parent conferenceA parent school relationship is important. Determine whether or not your child needs improvement with school work by asking the following:
Is my child learning at the same pace (or higher/lower) as the rest of the class?
In which areas, if any, do you feel there needs to be some improvement? -

It's ok to pick the teacher's brain. Find out his / her opinion - show that, as a parent, you care. Ask questions such as:
What books would you recommend for my child? -
Step 4
Finally, prepare for the future (next grade level). Ask the education specialist about the future: Are there any kids that should be placed in a class other than that of my child next school year?
