Things You'll Need:
- Closet
- Neutrals Clothes
- Basics Clothes
- Accessories
- Handbags
- Shoes & Boots
-
Step 1
Remove everything in your closet that is not your current size. If you must keep them, store them away for now. If it’s faded, outdated, or you haven’t worn it lately, think of three good reasons for keeping it. For each item, ask yourself: Is it your color? Your type? A good style? Otherwise take it to the thrift store.
-
Step 2
Eliminate what you don’t need, but be careful. One dress is a minimum for almost any woman’s wardrobe. You might, after all, get an unexpected invitation from someone exciting, and shopping in a rush often results in a compromise.
-
Step 3
Organize your clothes into groups, putting similar items together: jackets, skirts, pants, tops, dresses, sweaters and so forth. Line up your shoes and handbags so everything in your closet is in sight.
Start with a skeleton wardrobe of your favorite clothes. Identify your clothes that are basic neutral colors: black, brown, charcoal gray, navy blue, tan, white and denim.
Neutrals form the foundation of your wardrobe because they go with everything. Basic colors are the ones that are versatile and go with many others. Any of your neutrals may be used for skirts, pants, shoes and bags. Generally the darker neutrals are for wintertime, the lighter ones for summer. -
Step 4
Evaluate your work and casual life style. Consider evening activities, hobbies or sports in which you participate.
Identify colors that work best with your skin tone, hair and eye color and choose basic colors that look good on you and make you feel great. Phase out the wrong colors. The full benefit comes once your entire wardrobe consists of only your colors. Make your old things work by mixing them with a blouse, a scarf, or a vest from your color palette. -
Step 5
Start with basic clothes and keep it simple. A good wardrobe revolves around a few essential clothes in your season’s neutral or your basic colors. It’s easy to add extras according to your needs
-
Step 6
Plan your wardrobe year round from your palette choosing a color that is appropriate for that time of year. You have neutral colors, basic colors, and accent colors, colors for the beach, the bedroom and the boardroom; colors for day and colors for evening; colors for wintertime and colors for summertime.
-
Step 7
Always include a classic white, silk, linen or pure cotton blouse. Either under a sweater or by itself, it will look great with a variety of outfits.
-
Step 8
Don’t forget the classic closed-toe shoes, stacked heel pumps or quality boots that can take you anywhere in style.
-
Step 9
Choose your most flattering basic colors for your coat, suit, jacket, sweater, basic dress, and tops, the clothes worn closest to your face.
-
Step 10
An uncluttered closet and an overview of your clothing needs give you direction for shopping and for spending your money wisely. At the same time, with a little yearly weeding and updating, you will have a well-coordinated, easy-to-care-for wardrobe forever.
