Every day new Internet scams are popping up. Because of its wide acceptance and free advertising, Craigslist has unfortunately become a playground for scam artists. Learn how to spot the scams before one takes you for a ride.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • access to craigslist
  1. Step 1

Post an ad on craigslist. Any ad.

  2. Step 2

Make it a habit to respond to people interested in your ad only if they demonstrate proper and courteous word use. This step is optional, but it works great at weeding out the bad seeds.

  3. Step 3

When someone expresses interest in your ad and asks for your phone number, be careful. In most cases this is required since you need to talk on the phone to answer questions. But get their full name and phone number in return.

  4. Step 4

When you give out your address, be careful! Make it clear plan to do a background check on them. If they agree, great!

  5. Step 5

Now they have your name, phone, and address. If they ask you, "Are you going to be there for the next few hours?" be careful! If you answer, "No, let's do it this evening," they now know you're not home. Never say you're not home, even if you're not!

  6. Step 6

If you've given your name, phone, and address; you've run a background check; and you agree to meet at your home in the next couple of hours, you've done your part. If they don't show, you probably just spotted a scam. It's happening everywhere. And it just happened to me. Good thing I told them I'd be home for the next few hours!

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember, use good judgment and only reply if they use proper and courteous word choices. If they respond to my ad with, "hey... your chair still avail... interested," I'm gonna pass!
  • Never tell someone you're not going to be home for the next few hours!
