Being a girl in highschool these days comes with so much stress. Not only do they need to do well in school but taking honors courses and A.P. courses are now the norm. Add to the academic pressure the clubs and sports, boys and peer pressure and wardrobe and you have a pressure cooker.

This is the perfect age to teach your girls how to build a wardrobe that is affordable, fashionable and in style while still including the expensive name brand stores.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • time
  • malls near you
  • consignment stores
  • Goodwill stores
  • internet and printer
  1. Step 1

If you are working with your daughter, sit down with her and figure out her personal style. If someone dresses a little different but it fits their style they can pull it off. Does she like casual comfortable clothes? Does she like flowers and romantic looks more? Is she more comfortable with jeans and a t-shirt? If she doesn't have a style, have her write down some things about herself to come up with a style and theme.

  2. Step 2

Think about her body type. Is there an area of her body that she likes and wants to focus on? Does she have an area that she wants to diminish? What about her features and coloring, would dark vibrant colors look better on her or pastels and neutral tones work best?

  3. Step 3

Go through the wardrobe and pick out the clothes that she doesn't like, does not fit any more or that she is just tired of. Take the clothes and if they are in good condition, take them to a consignment store or have a hard sale. Let the money made from these clothes go in to the clothing budget.

  4. Step 4

If you are just starting out, take look at the clothes you have kept and build the wardrobe around this. Depending on the season, make sure you have the basics. Summer and spring can be combined and even in the winter by layering the clothes. You can still use some of the last seasons t-shirts, tank tops and even skirts. Adding a sweater and tights can even change the look.

  5. Step 5

Shop often and especially during the end of the season when the stores clear out their merchandise for the new seasons. Take trips to outlet malls too, you can often get name brand clothes at a real discount. Don't forget consignment stores, goodwill and yard sales. Sometimes you can find bargains on name brand clothes that have never been worn.

  6. Step 6

Do invest in a few high end articles if you can. If you are careful about the bulk of the wardrobe spending a little more on things like Uggs won't be such a burden. You will be getting most of the clothes much cheaper.

  7. Step 7

If you are buying off brand clothes, add in the brand names that you get on sale with their names on the shirts, this way, it looks like more of the wardrobe comes from the expensive stores, as opposed to the cheaper items.

  8. Step 8

Don't forget family members, if they have outgrown their clothes sometimes they work great for someone else. Especially the fillers for the wardrobe.

  9. Step 9

If you are shopping often you always know what the prices are and when you find a good deal, you'll know it. By trying on clothes even when you are not buying you know the sizes and styles that look good. This is a great way to shop on the internet and take advantage of discounts and online coupons.

You can also get coupons online from a lot of stores, you just have to print them out. Do a google search of online coupons or the store and you should be able to find a lot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Building a great wardrobe takes time so spread the spending out over 1 year.
  • Make sure what is bought is something special.
  • Try buying clothes that can add to other clothes already owned to create a new look.
  • Adding jewelry can also change the look of an outfit and don't forget about hair and makeup. Having an ok outfit with the right hair, make up and jewelry can turn it in to a knockout look.
  • Don't let the pressure of having the newest items make you feel guilty if you can buy them yet. Have your daughter get a part time job to earn money for some of these items.
  • Have her save the money she makes on selling her clothes for the special expensive things she may want.
