How to Thread a Kenmore Portable Sewing Machine

Most modern sewing machines follow the same general threading construction. Kenmore Portable Sewing Machines have not changed that much over the years. Every model and make comes with its own instruction manual. If you have lost the manual, most manufacturers will replace it free of charge. There is usually a customer service telephone number located somewhere on your machine. You will need the model and make number also located on your machine. Many appliance companies now will email a manual in PDF format that you can download and print.

Instructions

  1. How to Thread a Kenmore Portable Sewing Machine

    • 1

Place the spool of thread on the spool pin.

    • 2

Take the thread from the back of the spool and slide it through the top thread guide. Your machine might have embossed arrows to follow.

    • 3

Hold the spool so it doesn't move and string the thread through the top tension discs.

    • 4

Lead the thread down around the tension spring wire. The thread will pop into the hook.

    • 5

Pull the thread up and hook it over the thread take-up lever. In some models, there is an eye instead of a hook on the take-up lever.

    • 6

Pull the thread down toward the presser foot through two or three front thread guides. The number of thread guides depends on the model.

    • 7

Thread through the eye of needle from front to back.

    • 8

Remove the bobbin case from the shuttle in the machine. If the bobbin is full, replace it. If not, place the bobbin on the bobbin winder and load the bobbin with thread.

    • 9

Place the bobbin in the bobbin case and pull the thread clockwise through the slot in the bobbin under the tension spring.

    • 10

Pull four to five inches of thread from the bobbin slot.

    • 11

Hold the latch on the bobbin and place the bobbin case back into the shuttle.

    • 12

Releasing the latch secures the bobbin case into the shuttle. Replace the case front or compartment.

    • 13

Raise the presser foot, and using the handwheel, lower the threaded needle into the needle plate slot. Turn it one full turn.

    • 14

The needle should emerge, trailing the bobbin thread. Grasp both threads with your hand and pull it out five to six inches.
