Animated characters have touched most of our hearts since childhood. Classic animated films like Disney's "Snow White" inspired children and adults alike with wonderment. The slapstick antics of Warner Brother's cartoons made our sides split on Saturday mornings. You can create your own animated characters at home and use them to make your own original cartoons. These characters can be simple as you begin to learn the process of animation and can grow in complexity as you grow in skill.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Illustration board or construction paper
  • Pencil
  • Black ink pen
  • Eraser
  • Art markers
  • X-ACTO
  1. Step 1

Draw your character on illustration board or beige construction paper if you don't have illustration board. Use a large oval for the head and create the neck with two parallel lines coming out from the bottom of the head. Add the chest with an upside down "U" shape.

  2. Step 2

Draw the eyes of the animated character with small ovals inside the head. Create the nose with a curved "C" shape or a sideways "V." Draw the eyebrows with curved lines above the eyes. Add the mouth with a small slightly curved line.

  3. Step 3

Create the hair for your character with wavy lines around the outside of the head. Create bangs with curved triangular shaped along the forehead. Add ears with semicircles on the left and right side of the head.

  4. Step 4

Make a T-shirt for your character by simply drawing a curved line at the base of the neck. Ink all of the line you wish to keep with a black ink pen. Let the ink dry and erase your pencil lines.

  5. Step 5

Color your character using art markers. If you are using beige construction paper, you will not need to color the skin; otherwise, use a beige marker. Make the hair and clothes any color you like.

  6. Step 6

Color two small ovals with a beige marker on a separate sheet of paper. Cut these out using an X-ACTO. These will act as eyelids and allow your character to blink. Color a black oval and cut this shape out as well using an X-ACTO. This will act as an open mouth and will allow you to animate your character speaking.

  7. Step 7

Animate your character by taking a digital picture of your character and then placing the open mouth on the character. Snap another picture and remove the mouth. This will create a sequence of an opening and closing mouth. String these together in iMovie or Movie Magic to create a talking animation. Place the eyelids over the character's eyes and snap a photo to make the character blink.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cut out the entire character and place him on a background like a photograph of an office cubicle to give the animation more detail.
  • Place cardboard under anything you cut so you won't damage the surface.
