How to Make Giant Ribbons for Outdoors
Those giant ribbons that you see tied around trees or tied in bows around cars outside are available from specialty suppliers---and they are expensive. Instead of spending a ton of cash, make your own giant ribbons for outdoor use out of fabric. Pick out outdoor-rated fabrics or vinyl with a shiny finish from your local fabric store to add to the ribbon-like appearance. Use your giant ribbon to decorate for parties and holidays or to wrap an extra-large gift for someone special.

1
Decide what length of ribbon you need, 15 feet is a good length for wrapping around an average size tree and tying a bow. Add on an extra five feet to your total because too long of a ribbon is better than too short.
-
2
Cut the length of the fabric in half so it is 30 inches wide. Save half the fabric for another project or make two ribbons.
-
-
3
Lay the fabric out with the back side facing up. Fold over 2 inches of fabric on each of the long sides and pin in place.
-
4
Double-stitch over the folded fabric up the side to hem it so it doesn't fray. Repeat for the other long side of the ribbon.
-
5
Cut the each end of the fabric at a 30 degree angle. Fold over 2 inches of the each end and pin in place.
-
6
Hem the ends using a double stitch. Tie your ribbon around whatever you like, knowing it will survive the elements.

Tips & Warnings
Outdoor fabric usually comes on 60-inch-wide rolls. For shorter rolls, there is no need to cut it in half. Put a sheet of tissue paper under the fabric as you sew if it is catching in the walking mechanism of your machine.
Nylon fabrics will fade in the sun. Instead, choose waterproof fabrics made for awnings.
