Many African American women choose to wear their hair natural to avoid the harsh chemicals and heat needed to straighten the hair. While wearing hair in its natural state is overall advantageous, many women simply don't know how to create everyday styles for it. One efficient and convenient hair style you can try is twists. Twists can last up to six days before needing to be redone, and the style can create a fresh, different look with low maintenance.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rat-tail comb
  • Large-tooth comb
  • Hair oil, hair gel or your normal moisturizing hair product
  • Duck-bill hair clips or hair bows (optional)
  1. Step 1

Comb your hair to remove tangles and knots. Firmly hold the hair at the roots and comb starting at the ends.

  2. Step 2

Section off a small amount of hair at the nape of the neck and moisturize it by massaging hair oil, gel or a moisturizer of your choice throughout the section. If you prefer, you can pin up the rest of the hair with duck-bill clips or hair bows.

  3. Step 3

Comb the small section of hair with a rat-tail comb. Sections that have not been thoroughly combed through will result in twists that are hard to remove and possible hair loss.

  4. Step 4

Separate the section into two smaller sections with your fingers and twist the two sections around each other until you reach the tip of the hair. Gently pull the twist downward to secure the hold.

  5. Step 5

Section off another small amount of hair and repeat the moisturizing and twisting process until you have created an entire head of twists.

Tips & Warnings
  • Carefully protect your hairstyle by wearing a hair bonnet or scarf while sleeping to prevent creating frizz and loose hair. Moisturize your hair by spritzing it with water or oiling the twisted hair sections. Twists can also be created with larger sections of hair if preferred.
