How to Reformat My PS2 Memory Card

The PlayStation 2 was the successor to Sony’s hit PlayStation console and utilized memory cards along with an external hard drive to store data such as save files and in-game creations. It is possible for a PlayStation memory card to become corrupt. This may happen if it is unlicensed and made of substandard materials or if a game cheating device saved data that is incompatible with the core memory system. This problem may be corrected by simply deleting the corrupted information. When this does not solve the problem, a full reformat may be necessary.

Remove all game disks and other memory devices from the PlayStation 2. The PS2 must be empty in order to access the “Memory Settings."

Place the corrupt PS2 memory card in the first memory slot and turn on the console. This will bring you to a loading screen and the system settings menu.

Access “System Configuration” and then the “Memory Settings” subfolder.

Choose the first memory card and select “Format” from the available options. Be aware that this will delete all data from the card and reset it to its factory basic settings.

Wait for the card to finish formatting. Once this process is complete, you will have an empty PS2 memory card ready to be loaded with new information.
