Though originally developed by Apple, MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3) is now a popular audio format for both Windows and Macintosh systems, as well as for stand-alone media players like the iPod. WMA (Windows Media Audio) is a popular format for use on Windows computers. Both formats save disk space by compressing sound data while still preserving sound quality. You can easily convert between both formats using free utilities.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

    Media-Convert

  1. Step 1

Start with an online converter such Media-convert.com, which avoids downloading a program that takes up storage space and that can unleash malware on your system. The site limits you to a maximum conversion of 200MB.

  2. Step 2

Click the "Conversion from URL" tab to convert an online file and enter a web address in the "File" box. Or click the "Local File Conversion" tab to use a stand-alone file on your hard disk. Then click "Browse," find the file you need and double-click to upload it.

  3. Step 3

Specify "Automatic Detection" under "Input Format," so the site automatically determines the MP3 format. Then under "Output Format," choose "WMA." Enter a new file name. If the original file is too big, choose "Split File" and specify the size of the smaller files.

  4. Step 4

Click "I Accept the Terms" to read the conditions and then click "OK" to convert. A link to your file appears on the website. Right-click it and choose "Save Link As" to store the media onto your system.

  5. Switch Sound File Converter

  6. Step 1

Download, install and run a program like Switch Sound File Converter, which is linked under Resources. Click "Add Files" to put one or more WMA files into the conversion list. Note that the title, format, size and folder of each file is displayed.

  7. Step 2

Choose "MP3" as the "Output Format" and click "Encoder Options" to specify bit rates, hertz and whether to record in stereo or mono. In general, lower numbers produce smaller files with poorer sound quality. Larger numbers create better quality, but with larger files.

To put the converted files into the same folder as the original, click "Output to Same Folder." Otherwise, click "Browse" to specify an output folder name.

  8. Step 3

Click "Convert" to convert the file.

Tips & Warnings
  • Though your conversion utility may feature a player, always test the WMA file using a separate application. This enables you to confirm that the media is playable in something other than the converter.
