All breeds of cats, dogs and rabbits can suffer from infestations of ear mites, tiny insects that live in the warm, damp environment of your pets' ears. Ear mites can cause infections and other damage to your pets' ears, leading to balance problems and deafness. Although some people try to treat ear mites with homemade solutions, a visit to your vet is a better option.

1. Make an appointment with your vet to see your dog about whether he has ear mites. Many other conditions can appear to be ear mites, including yeast infections, waxy build-up and other problems.

2. Follow the directions given to you by the vet if your dog have ear mites. Killing ear mites requires a strong medicine that is applied to the dog's ears. Homemade solutions such as mineral oil and apple cider vinegar do not kill the eggs, which is why prescriptions are more effective for controlling and eliminating an infestation of ear mites.

3. Clean you dog's ears regularly to help prevent re-infestation of mites. After hunting or swimming, and after long walks in rural areas, clean your dog's ears out with a basic dog ear cleaner. Your vet can recommend a brand appropriate for your dog. If you see any signs of re-infestation, return to the vet for another treatment of medicine.
