You do not need a walk-in closet to provide you with extra space. Even the smallest of closets can benefit from the advantages of a few adjustments to create closet space. Storing items around the corners of your closet opens up the middle area.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Storage bins (or stackable shelves)
  • Hanging organizer with multiple pockets
  • Individual mounting hooks (or vertical or horizontal bar with multiple hooks)
  1. Step 1

Sort your clothing in two piles. Organize all spring and summer clothing in one pile, and all fall and winter clothing in a second pile. In late March or early April, hang up your spring and summer clothes and store your fall and winter pieces in storage bins or stackable shelves. In late August or early September, flip-flop your clothes. Splitting your clothes between hangers and bins will create additional space in your closet.

  2. Step 2

Place storage bins on the shelf above the hanging bar. This will free up some space around your closet floor. If your closet does not have a built-in shelf, you can store bins in the inside most left or right corners of your closet to allow more space toward the front of your closet. Fold and place stored clothes into drawers if you do not want to purchase storage bins.

  3. Step 3

Place your shoes by pairs into a hanging organizer instead of placing them side by side across your closet floor. You can hang the organizer on the left or right wall inside your closet. This will prevent you from tripping over your shoes as you reach for your clothes as well as leave your closet floor empty.

  4. Step 4

Mount individual hooks onto your closet wall to hang purses and belts. If you do not want to mount hooks with adhesives, you can hang a bar with multiple hooks for these items. Either approach prevents your purses and belts from becoming a tangled mess spread across your closet floor.
