How to Get Rid of Toxic Waste

Homeowners often dispose of toxic waste and other harmful products without even realizing it. You can bring such products, known as household hazardous waste (HHW), to many centers throughout the United States that specialize in properly disposing the waste per EPA standards. HHW items include anything poisonous or harmful to ingest, including any toxic materials. Expired medications also count as HHW. Do not dispose of such waste in dumpsters or trash bin; collect all hazardous waste and drop it off at your nearest HHW center. Does this Spark an idea?

    • 2

Find the nearest HHW center in your area by checking the earth911.com website. To locate a nearby center, type in your zip code or city, address and state, and then click on the "Search" button.

    • 3

Contact the center to which you want to bring your toxic waste, and make sure it will take all of the toxic items you want to bring.

    • 4

Place your toxic materials in a strong plastic bag or box that will not leak. When handling toxic materials, such as a leaking battery, make sure to wear rubber gloves and place the item in a sealable plastic bag.

    • 5

Drop off the materials at the HHW center during the available hours. Most centers have a drop-off box with labels on bins for various materials. Make sure to drop off the toxic materials in the appropriate bins.
