How to Clean a Very Large Chandelier

Cleaning very large chandeliers can be quite a challenge. Knowing what cleaning solutions to use and properly applying them can make all the difference in achieving successful results. Crystal needs to be handled in a very delicate manner. With some easily gathered supplies and a steady hand, anyone can effectively clean a very large chandelier without sacrificing the integrity of the crystals.

Things You'll Need:

    Cleaning While Assembled

  1. Step 1

    Turn off all power to any lighting fixture associated with your chandelier.

  2. Step 2

    Place plastic sandwich baggies around each light bulb, and fasten them with rubber bands.

  3. Step 3

    Place a towel or small blanket on the floor underneath the chandelier to prevent dripping.

  4. Step 4

    Fill a spray bottle with a mixture of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts distilled water.

  5. Step 5

    Spray all crystal on the chandelier, being extra cautious not to get moisture on non-crystal components.

  6. Step 6

    Allow the chandelier to air dry for 24 to 48 hours before resuming power to the light fixture.

  7. Disassembling to Clean

  8. Step 1

    Turn off all power to the chandelier.

  9. Step 2

    Take digital pictures of the chandelier so that you know how to reassemble it after cleaning.

  10. Step 3

    Remove the escutcheon (ornamental or protective) plate from the chandelier, and unscrew the nuts.

  11. Step 4

    Open a link in the chandelier suspension cord by using pliers to gently pry the two ends apart, and take down the chandelier.

  12. Step 5

    Place the crystals on a cotton towel, and clean each crystal with the spray bottle solution and allow to air dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not use any harsh cleaning products on crystal because it may damage the piece. Be careful not to move the chandelier much while you are spraying so the crystals do not bump into each other and chip.
