How to Paint a Garage Floor Checkerboard
A garage floor is generally a plain concrete slab, but you can perk up your boring garage floor with a stylish checkerboard design. A checkerboard is a simple design that even a novice painter can achieve on a concrete floor by using the appropriate paints and equipment. Clean the garage floor by sweeping and mopping the floor thoroughly to remove all dirt. Mop again using a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar to remove any greasy residue from the floor.

Use a paint roller to apply a concrete-safe primer to the garage floor. The directions on the can of primer will tell you what materials it can be used on.

Paint the base coat using a concrete-safe floor paint. These paints are often labeled as patio paints and are designed to be used on concrete and to hold up to the wear and tear of being walked on regularly. Use the lighter color in your checkerboard design as the base coat. Allow the paint to dry completely.

Use a pencil to draw a grid on the floor for the checkerboard. Apply 2 inch or wider painter's tape to the inside edges of each square you wish to remain the base color. Cut the edges of the tape with a utility knife so that you are only covering the base color squares with tape.

Paint the tape-free squares with the second color of concrete safe floor paint. When the paint is dry, carefully peel up the tape and throw it away. Sweep the garage floor to ensure that it is clean and dust-free.

Apply at least three coats of a water-based polyurethane clear coat to the garage floor, allowing the clear coat to dry completely between each application.
