How to Install SBC Valve Stem Seals

If you notice oily black deposits on the spark plugs of your small-block Chevy (SBC), if your "Service Engine Soon" light comes on for no apparent reason, you might think it's major. If your car belches a cloud of blue smoke when you start it--but the cloud goes away as quickly as it came--you might think it's the result of a cold-morning start. These are symptoms of a small problem that, if ignored, will eventually clog the arteries of the main catalytic converter. With moderate mechanical experience, you can install valve stem seals to solve these problems.

Things You'll Need

  • Valve stem seal kit
  • Replacement valve cover gasket
  • Drip pan
  • Air compressor.
  • Air compressor hose (spark plug hole attachment)
  • Torx bits
  • Standard & metric sockets
  • Valve spring compressor

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the valve covers. To remove the right valve cover, remove the EGR piping, a pipe that looks as if it's wrapped in aluminum foil. Set a drip pan under the car to catch the coolant that will leak when you remove the coolant intake hose, and remove the coolant intake hose. Unscrew the nuts that hold the valve cover and remove it.

    • 2

Remove spark plug and screw the air compressor attachment into the spark plug hole. Pump air into the cylinder. Remove rocker arm by removing the nut holding it in place. Place the valve spring compressor over the spring and compress the spring. Use a magnet to remove the two retaining rings when the spring is compressed, then remove the spring. Remove the seals on the intake and exhaust and place the new seals on the valves.

    • 3

Replace the spring on the valve. Replace the valve spring retainers and clips and remove the valve spring compressor. Release the air pressure. Replace the spark plug. Replace the rocker arm and tighten the bolt with your fingers. Repeat this process for each valve

Tips & Warnings

  • Replace the spark plugs when you replace the valve stem seals. The EGR mount may break when you remove the piping. A replacement is available for less than $5 from a dealer.

  • This project involves work with tools and compressed air. Appropriate caution is advised.
