How to Become a Certified Trainer in Nonviolent Communication

Nonviolent communication, developed by Marshall Rosenberg, is a method of communicating more clearly and with compassion toward families, friends, co-workers, in every situation. It focuses on empathy, listening with compassion and honest expression, stating one's needs in a manner that is more likely to be accepted by others. While certification is not necessary to teach NVC, it is helpful to keep up to date with the teachings and developing networks within the organization.

Instructions

  1. Trainer Certification in Nonviolent Communication

    • 1

Have a strong understanding of nonviolent communication and its principles. This includes, but is not limited to, having taken courses in NVC, studied under at least three certified trainers to gain an understanding of different teaching styles, and reading publications offered by NVC.

    • 2

Keep a log of training courses taken, including dates, number of hours and names of certified trainers. A minimum of 40 hours of study under certified trainers is necessary. Also, keeping a journal of insights and personal growth during the training process is helpful, and must be submitted when you apply for certification.

    • 3

If living in an area with certified trainers, candidates for certification are encouraged to volunteer to help with training sessions, undergo one-on-one mentoring and team trainings, and work on projects with a trainer.

    • 4

Complete a registration packet available from the NVC center. Two or three months before you are ready to be assessed by the NVC center, you should have your packet completed and submitted along with your $75 registration fee. You may also need to pay a small fee to your chosen assessor (certified trainer or mentor) who will assess your training skills during live training.

    • 5

Submit a 60-90 minute video of yourself giving a live training session. This is to include interaction with the participants as well as a presentation and application of NVC practices and principles.

    • 6

Provide feedback from those who have seen your live presentations. This includes feedback forms from participants as well as recommendations from mentors or certified trainers in your area.

    • 7

Your packet and information will be reviewed by the CNVC trainers at the national center and you will be notified when or if you qualify for certification. If you find that a decision has not been made in your favor, you can appeal and have your case reviewed by a mediator. The final judgment will be made by the executive director.
