The Hyundai Accent is manufactured with a hydraulic braking system that uses calipers, rotors and pads to provide most of the car's stopping power. The pads can wear out, and when that happens, they must be replaced. An average backyard mechanic can replace the pads on the Accent in about an hour.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Raise the car with the floor jack by placing the jack behind the front wheel (at the brake to be repaired), then pumping the lever until the wheel is in the air.

  2. Step 2

Remove the wheel by turning the lug nuts with the lug wrench in a counterclockwise direction. Set the wheel away from the car.

  3. Step 3

Remove the caliper by turning the rear mount bolts in a counterclockwise direction, then sliding the caliper and pads off of the rotor.

  4. Step 4

Replace the pads by pulling them free of the caliper pistons (some debris or rust can cause them to stick), then pressing new units into position.

  5. Step 5

Replace the caliper by sliding it back over the rotor, then turning the caliper mount bolts clockwise until snug.

  6. Step 6

Replace the wheel by turning the lug nuts clockwise, in an alternating pattern.

  7. Step 7

Lower the Accent from the floor jack by turning the jack's pressure bolt counterclockwise, slowly.

  8. Step 8

Repeat the entire process for the opposite side's front brake assembly.

Tips & Warnings
  • You should resurface or replace the rotors when changing the pads. Bleeding or purging the brake lines is optional, but it's recommended when replacing brake system parts.
  • Use extreme caution when working on a lifted vehicle.
