How to Track Your Car
A car owner can easily track his or her car with a Global Positioning System, better known as a GPS device. GPS is a satellite navigation system that was developed by engineers and the U.S. Department of Defense over several decades, starting in the 1950s extending into the 1990s. The technology has since matured so that a GPS can monitor movement of things and people, calculate and display directions, create maps, and tell time with accuracy.

When purchasing a GPS device, know what kind of GPS device you will need. There are many different brands and sizes of GPS devices; the most expensive system does not mean it is necessarily the best for you. The two basic types are GPS logging devices and GPS devices that use a web platform. Your specific needs for tracking will determine what GPS system is best for you. If you want a GPS device for safety or in case the car is stolen, you should choose a GPS that uses a web platform. If you use GPS technology to track your employees, you might want to use a GPS logger since it does not require a monthly fee.

GPS systems that use a web platform have a built-in connection to the Internet so that you can go on line and see where the car is located or the history of where the car has been. This will help you or law enforcement officials if the car is stolen and needs to be located. The advantage of this type of GPS device is that you do not have to go to the car to get the device to track where the car has been. The disadvantage is that there is a continuous fee; you will have to pay monthly for the cellular communication service.

A GPS device that is a data logger is placed in the car and records the locations as the car is driven. To see where the car has been, you must remove the device from the car and connect it to a personal computer to read the data. The advantage is that you receive a detailed report of where your car has traveled at the cost of just the device and without monthly fees. But the disadvantage is that you cannot locate your car if it is stolen; instead, you can only see where it has been if you recover the vehicle.

Consider the cost of installation, monitoring stations and operators, and also visit the manufacturers' websites for answers to other questions you might have.

If you have a newer model car, you may not have to buy a separate GPS system because the majority of new cars are offered with GPS systems already installed because of the popularity of the GPS technology. If you have to purchase a GPS device for an older car, the installation should be easy. Most GPS devices can be installed to the windshield by using a suction cup, while others can be mounted to the dashboard. Many GPS devices are also portable, permitting the devices to be detached and moved to different vehicles as needed.
