Do you like working with color and rearranging furniture? Do your friends turn to you for decorating advice? If this sounds like you, why not consider a career in interior decorating. Unlike, interior design, you don’t need a formal degree to become an interior decorator. You just need to have a good eye for design and enjoy working with people.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

You probably already have an eye for how shapes and colors work together, but you should take the time to learn as much as you can about color and design theory. You can read books, take online courses or attend classes at your local community college. You can also browse through magazines and visit model homes or showrooms to see modern decorating trends.

  2. Step 2

Get your interior decorator certification from Certified Interior Decorators International, or CID. This certification is not required, but it can set you apart from all of the other aspiring interior decorators. Check with the CID website to find out which courses you need before you can take the test. If you pass the test, you can join the CID as a professional. There is a charge for the test and an annual membership fee.

  3. Step 3

Practice your skills on your own home and the homes of your friends. You could volunteer to decorate a child’s room, help your friend redo their kitchen or design a home office. You could also help decorate for a special event such as a dinner party or wedding reception. Take pictures as you go, including before and after shots. Consider these opportunities your first real experiences as an interior decorator.

  4. Step 4

Make a portfolio to display your work. Arrange before and after photos of your best work into a photo album. Include samples or information about the materials you used. Include letters of recommendation from your previous clients. If you are just starting out, use photos from your own home or the rooms of friends that you have decorated. Ask these same friends to write letters of recommendation. Add a page that lists any certifications or training that you have had. Keep your portfolio updated as you gain more experience.

  5. Step 5

You can get a job as an interior decorator or start your own business. Some of the industries that hire interior decorators are home builders, furniture manufacturers, stores that sell furniture and home decor, hotels and interior decorating firms. Prepare a resume that includes your interior decorating experience and any other applicable skills. If you want to start your own business, check with your local labor board to find out how to register and what licenses you need. You will also need to handle your own advertising, billing and prepare your own taxes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hand business cards out to your friends and local businesses to advertise your interior decorating services. Even if they don't need an interior decorator, they may know someone else who does.
  • Network with professionals such as realtors and builders. They can refer their clients to you and you can return the favor.

on 11/15/2009 Thank you for this article. I would like to be an interior designer, but I lack the specific interior design education. I didn't realize there was a diference between a designer and decorator. I will check out this option for sure!
