Buttons can add style and pizzazz to clothing. This tutorial will explain how to make kiln fired, fused glass buttons.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • glass fusing kiln
  • drill (Dremel, Foredom Flex Shaft or Drill Press)
  • diamond coated drill bits
  1. Step 1

Make or select a piece of fused glass that you would like to make into buttons.

  2. Step 2

Determine how many buttons you need for your piece of clothing.

  3. Step 3

Determine the size buttons you will need for the button hole in your piece of clothing. There are many typical sized buttons, but the effectiveness of your button as a device to secure clothes will lie in its ratio to the button hole.

  4. Step 4

1 inch is a typical size button. To make square buttons, cut the glass into 1x1 inch squares. To make circular buttons, use a 1 inch glass hole saw to cut 1 inch circles.

Adjust the size of your cuts depending on the button size you require.

  5. Step 5

File the edges of the cut glass with a diamond coated file until smooth.

  6. Step 6

Drill two holes in the center of the cut glass pieces with a drill and diamond coated drill bits. You can use a Dremel, Foredom flex shaft or drill press or any other type of drill as long as you use diamond coated drill bits.

  7. Step 7

Fire the glass to fire polish your buttons using the following schedule as a guide:

Ramp ºF/Hr Target temperature Hold for
    1 Full 1450 15
    2 Full 960 12
