How to Measure for Laminate Countertops on New Cabinets

Measuring countertops before ordering laminate ensures the correct amount and fit are ordered and properly cut. The most important thing to remember when measuring for counter tops is consistency. If some measurements are taken from the front of the counter top, while others from the back, there is a possibility that the counters will not align correctly and new laminate will be required. Instructions

On a piece of paper, draw a rough diagram of cabinet shape. Be sure to account for the overall shape of the room.

    • 2

Measure the back wall of all the cabinets and note the specific dimensions on the paper. Measure the counter depth from back to front for all cabinets. A standard countertop's depth is 24 inches. If measuring for a bar as well, specify it on the paper and determine the desired bar overhang. Industry standard for bar overhangs is 11 inches. Determine the desired amount of countertop overhang. In general, one inch is the industry standard as it provides a clean finish to the countertops.

    • 3

Mark and measure all necessary cutouts for sinks, stoves and other appliances. If the specific size is unknown or can't be determined, measure the diameter and specify such on the paper.

    • 4

Make note of visible and nonvisible ends of the countertop. Mark all visible ends with an EC (end cap). Mark all non-visible ends with an ES (end splash)
