How to Administer Bronchodilators

Bronchodilators are a group of medications used to improve breathing. They work by opening the airways in the lungs. Bronchodilators are usually administered by inhaler so the medication can go straight into the lungs without going through the bloodstream first.

Things You'll Need

  • Bronchodilator inhaler
  • Spacer (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Shake your inhaler three or four times.

    • 2

Attach your inhaler to a spacer (if desired). Spacers can distribute the bronchodilator more evenly and prevent it from getting trapped in the mouth.

    • 3

Exhale completely and put your mouth around the end of the inhaler or spacer.

    • 4

Inhale slowly. Try counting to five silently while you take in a full breath.

    • 5

Hold your breath a few seconds so the medication can settle into your lungs.

    • 6

      Exhale.

    • 7

      Repeat if directed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some bronchodilators are available in liquid or pill form if you have trouble using an inhaler. Spacers should not be used with dry powder inhalers. They only release medicine if you pull air directly through the mouthpiece.

  • Bronchodilators can be short-acting, long-acting, or daily use. Some people are prescribed more than one type, so make sure you're using the right medication for your symptoms.
