How to Get Ready to Take a GED Test
GED stands for General Educational Development. Upon passing a GED test, a person is awarded a certificate that is the equivalent of a high school diploma. According to Education Portal, 97 percent of colleges and universities accept a GED for adults who did not complete high school. (Reference #1) The ways to earn your GED vary by state, but the basic steps are the same everywhere.

Find a GED testing facility. According to Education Portal, you may call (800) 626-9433, the GED hotline, to find the nearest testing facility in Canada or the United States (Reference #1).

Check with your state to ensure you qualify. Qualifications vary by state, but usually you must be at least 16, or sometimes even 18 years old, and not a high school graduate.

Register to take the GED test by either going to the testing office in person or by downloading the application and then returning it to the testing facility.
Again, each state varies its requirements and cost associated with taking this test. Education Portal noted that some common registration procedures are: go to the local testing center for registration, pay the fee up front (between $10 to $70), show proof of identification along with Social Security card and proof of residency.

Study for the exam with GED study materials available at bookstores or online.

Take your GED test at the local testing facility the day of the exam. Bring pens and pencils, but leave everything else behind. According to Education Portal, anything besides the essentials will be confiscated before the exam, although they are returned upon completion (Reference #1).
