How to Configure Internet Access for a Laptop

Almost all laptops sold today include a built-in wireless card to access the Internet. This is particularly important for travelers, who can stay connected via Wi-Fi hot spots. Many people also employ wireless technologies in their homes. Many local libraries also offer free wireless Internet. To configure Internet access for a laptop, therefore, it's good to know how to connect to a wireless connection.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Click on "Start" and scroll up to "Connect To" and click on "Show All Connections" from the side menu that appears upon scrolling over "Connect To."

  2. Step 2

    Right click on the "Wireless Connection" icon, which appears directly below the "LAN" or "High Speed Internet" icon within the "Network Connections" window. This will launch the wireless connections window listing the wireless connection options.

  3. Step 3

    Select "View Available Wireless Networks" from the pop-up menu that appears. You should choose the wireless connection corresponding to your wireless router, if you have one.

  4. Step 4

    Select the wireless network you would like to connect to.

  5. Step 5

    Click on "Allow Me to Connect to the Selected Wireless Network." An Internet connection icon should appear in the bottom right corner of your screen when you are connected.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also connect to the Internet via Ethernet or dial-up connections if your laptop has the appropriate modems installed.
  • Be aware that some wireless networks are protected and require a password.
