How to Kill Head Lice Eggs

Head lice are parasites that can live in your hair and drink the blood from your scalp. Lice infestation is a common dermatological problem and usually affects school children because of their close contact and tendency to share items such as combs and brushes. Head lice eggs are called nits and normally attach themselves near the scalp. If left untreated, lice eggs can hatch and damage your hair, causing hair loss over time. By employing all the methods below, you can eliminate the eggs of head lice.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply a lice-killing shampoo. Shampoos such as Rid are effective when used properly. These shampoos also act as an antiseptic that can help protect your scalp against infection. Always read and follow the instructions before applying.

    • 2

Use a specially made comb for removing lice and their eggs. Using a flashlight, carefully examine every section of the scalp for eggs. They will appear yellow or white and can resemble dandruff. Dip the comb in a bowl of hot water so they don't go on the floor. Do this daily until you no longer find any eggs.

    • 3

Wash all affected clothing, linens and towels in hot water. The hot water will destroy the lice and their eggs. Lice eggs will not hatch and normally die in a few days if the temperature is cooler than that of the scalp. Additionally, run any used combs and brushes under hot water. Thoroughly vacuuming your rugs will also help remove lice eggs.

    • 4

Continuously check the scalp and hair for lice and their eggs after treatment is finished. This must be done every two to three days. If lice and eggs persist, you may want to contact a physician for a stronger treatment.
