Making lined drapes will create a more polished look and provide increased privacy for your home or business. Lined drapes provide better insulation from the external elements. It is possible to make lined drapes with a sewing machine, serger or to sew them by hand. Once you choose the color and style you like, you are ready to shop for the fabric to make your professional looking lined drapes.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure the windows you will be covering with a tape measure. Add an inch to both sides of the window for your measurements.

  2. Step 2

Cut the curtain fabric about two feet longer than the window to allow for the hem and heading.

  3. Step 3

Cut the fabric for lining the drapes. Cut the lining fabric about 10 inches longer than the window for the hem and heading. The hems of the lining fabric should be smaller than for the external drapes.

  4. Step 4

Fold the bottom of the fabric for the drapes up about five inches and hot iron press it into place. Then repeat this step with another five-inch fold and press.

  5. Step 5

Sew the hem of the external drapes with a straight stitch or a blind hem stitch.

  6. Step 6

Fold the bottom edge of the lining fabric up two inches and hot iron press into place. Repeat this step before sewing.

  7. Step 7

Sew the hem into the lining fabric with a blind hem stitch or a straight stitch.

  8. Step 8

Pin the lining and the fabric together in proper alignment, leaving an inch where the exterior drape fabric is longer than the lining fabric.

  9. Step 9

Fold the side edges over one another and stitch the side edges of the fabric together with a straight stitch.

  10. Step 10

Fold the top edges of the drapery and lining fabric over to create the loop for the curtain rod to pass through.

  11. Step 11

Stitch the heading into place and hang your new lined drapes.

Tips & Warnings
  • The size of your heading will depend upon the size of the curtain rod you will be placing through it. You also may choose to hem the top and cut holes for drapery rings instead of a curtain rod pocket heading.
  • When pressing the fabric to create the hems, make sure to use the correct heat setting so that you do not damage the fabric.
