How to Return to Norton's Default Settings

Keeping a computer safe from viruses is often as simple as having an anti-virus program installed with the correct settings and updated definitions. Unfortunately, many PC users change their anti-virus program's settings, which can make it easier for viruses to penetrate. Norton's default anti-virus settings are considered to be more than adequate for protection, which is why many users who have changed the settings seek to go back to the default settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Close all other open programs and browsers. Sometimes these can interfere with Norton and make changing settings more difficult.

    • 2

Open Norton Anti-Virus by going to "Start > Programs > Norton > Norton Anti-Virus."

    • 3

Click the "Options" tab at the top bar of Norton and select "Norton Anti-Virus".

    • 4

Click the "Default All" button. If this does not work, individually click the "Default" buttons next to each setting.

    • 5

      Click "Apply" and then "OK."

    • 6

Reboot your computer by going to "Start > Shutdown > Restart." Open Norton after the computer has rebooted and the default settings will be restored.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your virus definitions updated. While having the default settings will help ensure that your PC remains free of viruses, it's also important to keep the virus definitions updated. To do this, right-click the "Norton" icon in the bottom right of the screen and select "Update Definitions." Do this every two to three days and your computer will be well-protected against threats.
