How to Merge Pictures
You have two or more image files covering different parts of the same scene and you want to merge them into one large image. We will use the Paint program that is part of the Windows operating system to merge the images. The only requirement is that the images have to be overlapping or touching. There cannot be any gaps.
Things You'll Need
- Image files in common format (ending with .jpg, .png, .bmp, .gif or .tif)
- Computer with the Microsoft Windows operating system (XP or Vista recommended)
Instructions
-
-
1
Open the Paint program by clicking on "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories" and then "Paint."
-
2
Open the first of your image files that you want to merge. To do so, drag the file icon from Windows Explorer onto the Paint window and drop it there. Press the "Control" key plus "E" to assess the dimensions of the source image.
-
-
3
Open another Paint window (the same way as in Step 1). This will be our target canvas on which we assemble the individual source images. We should have enough space to accommodate the merged image. Guess the approximate size of the merged image based on the size of the image opened in Step 1. Adjust the size of the target image accordingly by hitting "Ctrl-e."
-
4
Click on the Paint window containing the source image and hit "Ctrl-a" to select the whole source image, followed by "Ctrl-c" to copy the image to the clip board. Click on the Paint window containing the target image and hit "Ctrl-v" to paste the source image there.
-
5
Go to the target image window and move the cursor above the pasted image. Click and drag the pasted region to where you want it and release the image.
-
6
Repeat Steps 1, 3 and 4 for the remaining source images. When moving around source images on the target image, according to Step 4, pay attention to overlapping or neighboring regions in order to find a perfect fit. If your target image area is too small, you can always adjust its size by hitting "Ctrl-e" and repositioning the merged image. Use "Ctrl-a" to mark it, followed by drag-and-drop repositioning as explained in Step 4.
-
7
Mark the region of the merged image that you are interested in. In the "Edit" menu, select "Copy To." In the dialog that pops up, enter a target file name and click "Save." This will produce your merged image.
