How to Build a Bed With Stock Cabinets

Save

Everyone needs a bed. Everyone needs storage space. The marriage of the two--a bed built upon a base of stock cabinets--is a common-sense answer for people with tight living quarters. Using some easily available stock cabinets with freely available construction materials, you can build a bed with cabinets below.

Things You'll Need

  • Stock cabinets
  • 3/4-inch particle board
  • 2-inch-by-4-inch planks
  • Circular saw
  • 2-inch wood screws
  • Screwdriver or drill with phillips bits
  • Bedding accessories--box springs and mattress or air mattress
  • Arrange the cabinets on the floor of the bedroom, in the desired configuration.

  • Cut the particle board to fit the desired bed size, then place the wood along the top of the cabinets to ensure proper fit. Do not attach the board yet.

  • Attach the cabinets to each other. Depending on the manufacturing style of the cabinetry, you may need to use furring strips between the cabinets to improve stability. Put a 2-inch-by-4-inch strip along the inside top of the cabinets, drilling through the cabinet and into the plank, to keep all cabinets secured to each other.

  • Put the plank on top of the joined stock cabinets. Drill into the cabinet tops, if necessary, or preferably, drill straight down through the plank into the 2-inch-by-4-inch strips below. A minimum of eight screws will be sufficient.

  • Put your desired bedding on top and verify fit.

  • Finish the bed--sand the sides of the plank and provide any paint or cloth coverings necessary to improve the look of your new bed.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your bed will move a lot, put coasters beneath the cabinets to protect the wood laminate from chipping. Use screws instead of nails to facilitate disassembly in case the bed needs to move to a different home.
  • Some cabinets have small wooden protrusions that will weaken over time, possibly leading to failure, if too much pressure is applied. Try to find stock cabinets with flat tops so the weight load of the bed top is evenly spread.
