How to Install a Telephone Wall Outlet
A telephone wall outlet will allow you to connect your telephone to a telephone line. A house may be wired with up to three telephone lines, so you'll need to decide which one to connect your phone to. A phone outlet installation is a fairly routine task that requires good color vision in addition to a few simple tools. Does this Spark an idea?

Locate the telephone wires for line 1 as this is the line you'll most often want to connect to. The traditional color code for line 1 uses red wire for the negative (ring) lead and green wire for the positive (tip) lead.

Identify the wires for lines 2 and 3 if you wish to install an outlet to a second or third line. The traditional color code for line 2 uses yellow wire for the ring lead and black wire for the tip lead. Line 3 uses blue wire for the ring lead and orange wire for the tip lead.

Examine the back of the outlet's faceplate. Locate the 2 terminals that connect to the middle 2 pins of the 6 pins in the telephone jack. Call the terminal that connects to the left innermost pin terminal A and the terminal that connects to the right innermost pin terminal B.

Choose the telephone line you wish to use. Snip the ends off those wires and strip 1/2-inch of insulation from both wires. Wrap the bare end of the tip wire around terminal A and the bare end of the ring wire around terminal B. Tighten the screws for both terminals to hold the wires in place.

Test your installation by plugging a working telephone into the telephone outlet. Fix any connection problems so that you get a clear dial tone from the telephone. Attach the telephone outlet to the wall using the screws that came with the outlet.
