  1. How to Tell if Your Income Tax Check Was Sent

    • 1

Call the IRS. The IRS has a customer service line which is open from 7am-10pm. Any IRS representative can locate your account and advise you whether your check has been sent. They can also tell you if your refund is delayed, the amount of the refund, and the day on which it was mailed. Just be sure to have your name, address, social security number, and filing status (Single, Married Filing Joint Return, Married Filing Separate Return, Head of Household, or Qualifying Widow(er)) on hand before you make the call, as the representative will request this information for verification purposes. Also, the IRS advises that you allow 7-14 days for receipt of a mailed check.

Check your refund status at www.irs.gov. Just click on "Check on Your Refund" to determine the mail date for your refund. Before you can access your refund status, the page will prompt you to enter the expected amount of your refund. Once that's done, a new screen will populate, giving you the date your refund was mailed or the date it is scheduled to be mailed.

Go to an IRS walk-in office and request the status of your refund in person. If you're unsure of the location of your nearest walk in office, go to www.irs.gov/localcontacts/index.html for location information

If you are expecting a check and it hasn't arrived, go to the local post office which serves your area. Often times, the IRS inputs the address incorrectly and the post office mails the check back to the IRS. The post office will be able to tell you whether they returned your check to the IRS.

To check on whether a check was sent by way of direct deposit, call your bank or go to your bank's website to access your account. Usually, your account activity will reflect any pending or confirmed deposits. Deposits from the IRS appear on your account as "Department of Treasury."
