How to Make a Box Guitar

It is raining outside, the kids are getting restless and you need a project to keep them happy. If you have some shoe boxes sitting around, or any similar size boxes, then you can create box guitars for everyone and let them pretend they are on stage playing in a band.

  • Scissors
  • Paints and other things to decorate the box with

Instructions

  1. Make a Box Guitar

    • 1

Take the lid of the shoe box and cut an oval-shaped hole in it that leaves about 1/2 an inch of space all around the hole. If you are using a box other than a shoe box, just cut a similar hole in the side of the box that is already sealed. When the hole is cut, put the lid back on the box and tape it down using masking tape. For other kinds of boxes, simply seal the box closed.

    • 2

Put glue on one end of the paper towel roll and use tape to attach it to the box as though it were the neck of a guitar. The paper towel roll should be attached to the narrowest side of the box. Set the guitar aside and allow the glue to dry.

    • 3

Choose a primary color to paint the box guitar. Once the paint has dried, start decorating with pictures, stickers or paints. This is the part of the creation process that can be the most fun and potentially the messiest. Make sure to put down newspapers or an inexpensive drop cloth to prevent paint and glue from damaging furniture or rugs. Set the guitar aside and allow it to dry.

    • 4

Stretch the rubber bands across the opening of the box in the same direction as the paper towel roll. Different sized rubber bands will create different kinds of sounds.

Tips & Warnings

  • You do not have to limit the box guitar to four rubber bands. Try using six to give the feel of a real six-string guitar.

  • Always be careful when working with paint, glue and scissors around children.
