How to Repair a Cordless Battery
Cordless tools make it easy to do work without the need of electrical outlets or cords. They become useless however when the battery for the device begins to lack power or fails to recharge sufficiently. Both of these are symptoms of a failing battery pack, and there is no guarantee that you will be able to find an affordable replacement pack. Don't worry however, because you can repair a battery pack with just a few basic tools and a little time.
Things You'll Need
- Screwdriver
- Soldering iron, equipped with a chisel tip
- Wire brush
- Pencil and paper
- Replacement size AA or sub-C Ni-Cad or Ni-MH batteries
- Epoxy adhesive

1
Remove the battery pack from the device and inspect it, looking for some small Phillips head screws that will allow you to open the plastic case of the pack. If your pack has these screws, remove them, set the pack on its base, and take off the top piece of plastic to gain access to the inside.
-
2
Cut open the plastic case of the battery pack if it has no screws. Do this by using the soldering iron with a chisel tip. Cut through the plastic, working around the top portion of the base of the pack.

3
Remove the top piece of plastic and set it aside. You will find that the battery pack is made up of a group of either size AA or Sub C rechargeable battery cells.
-
4
Take a minute to take some notes as to the manner in which the battery cells are arranged and also the way in which they are connected. This will be helpful later on when you need to reassemble the pack. Use the soldering iron to warm the connections on the cells, and then disconnect and remove them.
-
5
Clean the connections with a wire brush, removing any corrosion or oxidation that has built up on them.
-
6
Set the new batteries in place, referring to your notes if necessary to duplicate the old arrangement. Solder the connections to the batteries.
-
7
Place the top piece of the plastic case back on top of the battery pack and secure it with the screws, or if the case had to be cut open, attach the two pieces together by using a liberal amount of epoxy adhesive. Allow the epoxy to dry completely before attaching the battery pack to its charger. Let the pack charge up overnight, and in the morning it will be ready to work just like as a new one.
